 Shobana Chandrakumar, a renowned Indian actress, was born on March 21, 1970, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, to Chandrakumar Pillai and Anandam Chandrakumar. She is the only child of her parents and does not have any siblings.


Shobana is the niece of the legendary Travancore sisters, Lalitha, Padmini, and Ragini, and received her Bharatanatyam training from Chitra Visweswaran, a renowned Bharatanatyam exponent, at the Chidambaram Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Her first appearance in films was as a child artist in the film Amar Prem (1972), starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, and she was introduced to the industry by Jaya Chakravarthy (Hema Malini's mother), who spotted her with her aunt and one of the Travancore sisters, Padmini Ramachandran.


Shobana received the best child actor award for her performance in the Tamil-language drama film Mangala Nayagi (1980), directed by Krishnan–Panju, and starring Srikanth and K. R. Vijaya. She made her acting debut in a leading role in the Malayalam-language film April 18 (1984) opposite Balachandra Menon.

In 1993, Shobana won her first Best Actress National Film Award for her role in A.M. Fazil's Malayalam-language psychological thriller film Manichitrathazhu (1993), co-starring Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi. She won her second-Best Actress National Film Award for her performance in the English-language film Mitr, My Friend (2002), directed by Revathi.

The Government of India honored Shobana with the Padma Shri award in 2006 for her contribution to classical dance. She adopted a girl child as a single parent in 2011 and named her Anantha Narayani Chandrakumar.

Educational and Research Institute, Chennai, and The Vinaya Mission University, Salem, in 2018. In 2021, she received a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala.

Shobana founded the Kalarpana dance school academy in Chennai in 1994, where she teaches classical dance to aspiring dancers. Her contribution to the Indian film industry and classical dance has earned her numerous accolades and made her a household name.
