South African players to miss opening matches of IPL 2023 due to ODI series against the Netherlands
The highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is set to begin on March 31st, but there is bad news for seven IPL teams as about 10 South African players will miss the opening matches of the tournament. The reason behind this is that these players will be participating in a 2-match ODI series against the Netherlands from March 2nd to April 3rd.
South Africa needs to win the ODI series against the Netherlands to qualify directly for the ODI World Cup 2023, and the last ODI will be played on March 2nd, while the IPL will commence on March 31st. As a result, the South African players participating in this series will not be able to participate in the IPL matches held in the first four days.
The South African Cricket CEO, Pholetsi Moseki, has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the ODI series. Among the players who will miss the opening matches of the IPL are Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock, Enrique Norkhia, Lungi Ngidi, Adin Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Marco Jensen, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brewis, and David Miller. This news comes as a big blow to the respective franchises of these players, as they may have to bear the loss of not having them play in the opening matches.
