Laxmi Meher's Early life and background
Lakshmi was born in Tarava, a tiny hamlet in Odisha's Subarnapur District, and now lives in Bolangir. She is the wife of Padmashri Kailash Chandra Meher, a well-known artist. Prakash Meher and Jayanta Meher are her two sons, while Manisha Meher is her daughter. They have all been recognized with a National Award for their contributions to Odisha Pattachitra Paintings.
Laxmi Meher's Career
She began painting when she was 18 years old, after her marriage. Her spouse watched after her as she worked on her paintings. She has developed a high level of expertise in traditional painting over the previous three decades.
She has educated numerous younger generations at institutions such as the Indian Art & Craft Academy for Women, in addition to being a housewife. She is now a well-established craftsperson who has also provided training and employment to many young craftsmen in the KBK districts of Odisha through government-sponsored training programs such as the 'Guru Shishya Parampara under HRD plan' and 'Scheme-C'.
In her lifetime, Smt. Meher has participated in several handicraft exhibits across the country, and her paintings are highly regarded by art lovers, VIPs, and exhibition visitors. In 2005, HE the President of India awarded her the Master Craftsman National Award, and in 1990, she received the State Award from the Chief Minister of Odisha.
