According to Wikipedia, Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honor of Lord Shiva, and in particular, marks the day of the celebration of the marriage of Shiva. There is a Shivaratri in every luni-solar month of the Hindu calendar, on the month's 13th night/14th day, but once a year in late winter (February/March, or Phalguna) and before the arrival of Summer, marks Maha Shivaratri which means "the Great Night of Shiva".

The festival of Mahashivaratri has special recognition in Hinduism. The biggest festival of worship of Lord Shiva is Mahashivratri. On this day Shiva devotees keep fast along with worship to please Bholenath. It is said that it is auspicious to offer flowers, cannabis, plum, raw cow's milk, curd, sandalwood, desi ghee, Ganga water, etc. to Lord Shiva during worship.
