In a bid to tap the huge potential to produce solar power in the State, the State Government is mulling to set up floating Solar Photo Voltaic (PV) Projects in the major reservoirs.
According to officials, major reservoirs such as Hirakud, Chipilima, Upper Kolab, Balimela, Indravati and Rengali are available for such an initiative.A senior official said the technical support of the European Union is being sought for setting up of such projects.
Recently, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has offered to set up 100 MW Floating Solar PV (FSPV) Project in Hirakud and Chipilima reservoirs.
SECI, which has roped in Marubeni as partner, has offered the State Government to allow 100 MW FSPV projects in the Hirakud and Chipilima reservoirs.
Hirakud is a huge reservoir while Chipilima’s Power Channel offers large scope for such projects, said a senior officer.Solar Panels will be set up in these reservoirs to produce power which is non polluting. Most importantly with such projects the evaporation loss of the reservoir will be reduced to a great extent, experts opine.
The SECI, which has planned for 10 Giga Watt (GW) Solar Power through FSPV, has evinced keen interest in Odisha as it is blessed with huge water bodies to land such projects.
The SECI, said officials, recently urged for allowing feasibility study for 100 MW solar project in Hirakud and Chipilima. The SECI is also eager to take Green Energy Development Corporation Limited (GEDCOL) as its partner for developing the floating solar projects.
Similar offer has been made to Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC), which is also a Green Energy producing organization as hydro power is also an Green Energy Initiaitve, officials said.
Floating Solar Projects will not require any land which is posing tough time for the State Government for acquisition.
