Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Union Minister of Steel Chaudhary Birender Singh on Saturday inaugurated the basic oxygen furnace at the integrated steel plant of Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) in Odisha.
The ministers also inaugurated a 2 million tonne per annum (MTPA) DRI plant, a blast furnace billed as India’s largest, and a coal gasification plant for making steel based on indigenous coal.
He said the 2 MTPA DRI Plant is the world’s largest syngas-based plant and for the first time, a company in India is using coal gasification method for steel making. The coal gasification plant has been set up with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore. Gasification is a process that converts organic- or fossil fuel-based carbonaceous materials into carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
