3 internships to be mandatory for engineering students - a step to improve their job prospect

‘No internship No Degree’- this is the new guideline brought in by the government to put a cap on the rising rate of ‘unemployable’ engineering students in the country. With the intention of making engineering students more employable, the government has made it mandatory for each student to complete a minimum of three internships during their under-graduation.

Citing a data of AICTE(All India Council for Technical Education), Javadekar said only 6.96 lakh students got the job through campus placements out of the 15.87 lakh students from 10,328 technical institutes in 2015-16.AICTE also revealed that less than 1 percent of the engineering students take up summer internships.

The low-employability levels of students have been a major cause of concern. Even though companies are coming for campus selection, they are not getting students with the requisite skills, said an educationist.HRD (Human Resource Development) Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday told the Lok Sabha that all students of technical institutes in India are ought to undergo three internships during this academic year. Their respective institutions are responsible for finding students suitable industries for the internship.
